Monks on the remote island of Illauntaunig off the Kerry coast carved this highly symbolic, strikingly simple cross.
The monks were faced with two main concerns: the spiritual and the practical. The practical question of how to feed the body was answered by the sea and the spiritual question of nourishing the soul was met by faith. Both these dimensions are described by this ancient carving from the island which depicts a cross standing in the waves, which also resembles a masted boat.
Carved by the sculptor Liz Morrissey after the stone original on the remote island of Illauntaunig off the Kerry coast, this piece has been hand poured using pure bronze before being carefully polished.
Dimensions: 3 x 9 inches (8 x 24cm)
